In the course of this discussion, my friend maintained that Poe's marked originality of style, both in thought and expression, rendered difficult almost to impossibility a successful imitation of him. It was early November of 1859 that Gardette, later by his own admission, wrote a poem in the general style of 'The Raven'. This was 'The Fire-Fiend' and its author was a 29-year-old Philadelphian named Charles Desmarais Gardette.
